Meet Our World Class Cancer Care Experts
A native of Cranbrook, British Columbia, Dr. Kelly says she’s had her eye on the Inland Northwest for as long as she can remember. From vacations to run in Spokane’s annual Bloomsday Road Race or camp around Lake Coeur d’Alene, to following nearly every Canadian’s passion for hockey as her classmates, the NHL’s famous Niedermayer brothers and their teammates played junior hockey against the Spokane Chiefs.
Dr. Kelly’s natural curiosity attracted her to the sciences at an early age and led her to pursue a degree in biochemistry at the University of Calgary and a medical degree at the University of Alberta. When an aunt, barely in her 40s was diagnosed with breast cancer, Kelly’s focus on cancer care and radiation oncology was set. Taking what she learned about the disease and its treatment, she’d talk with her aunt about what was happening in an effort to offer whatever insight and comfort she could. The experience informs her philosophy of patient treatment and care to this day.
Dr. Kelly completed a five-year residency program in Radiation Oncology at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario and at the Tom Baker Cancer Center in Calgary, Alberta and entered practice at Mercy Cancer Center in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
With her eye still firmly focused on living and working in the Inland Northwest, Dr. Kelly moved to the Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls Cancer Centers where she first became involved in discussions with Dr. Arvind Chaudhry (now director of Summit Cancer Centers) around his vision of creating a multi-disciplinary center that would combine world class science and technology with nutrition, meditation and other “whole patient” therapies to create a highly coordinated circle of treatment and care.
According to Dr. Kelly, the science of cancer treatment is advancing at an exponential rate. Today, tools like the CyberKnife — a linear accelerator mounted on a robotic arm that utilizes cruise missile tracking technology to target and follow tumors means patients receive therapy that is more precise, powerful and effective — delivered in shorter-term treatments than ever before.
As Medical Director at Spokane CyberKnife and Radiation Oncology Center, Karie-Lynn Kelly MD is dedicated to providing patients with the highest quality of care utilizing world-class technology and thoughtful, experience based treatment. She is trained in all aspects of Radiation Oncology, including CyberKnife® and TrueBeam Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), IMRT, IGRT, 3DCRT, electron therapy, and brachytherapy. Dr. Kelly is an active member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology.
A mother of four, Dr. Kelly and her busy family live in north Idaho — which she describes as a nearly perfect place to raise a family.
