Ken Clark is a man driven by passion in the fast lane: in his time he has raced, promoted, and managed races for motorcycles, hot rods, and watercraft. Now 78, Ken spends much of his time restoring classic roadsters and cycles to peak condition - and he isn't letting anything, even a cancer diagnosis, keep him out of the racing line.
During a checkup in early 2014, Ken's local physician discovered a high PSA count in his body, and, following a biopsy, his urologist diagnosed him with prostate cancer. Ken’s urologist referred him to Dr. Karie Lynn-Kelly at Spokane CyberKnife and Radiation Oncology center, where he was presented with the option of conventional radiation treatments (IMRT and IGRT), which take over eight weeks of radiation therapy across 45 treatment sessions, or the latest targeted radiation treatment: CyberKnife robotic radiation therapy. The CyberKnife system is a non-surgical treatment of extremely precise radiation delivered in a very high dose and in five short treatments in less than a week.
CyberKnife treatment is clinically proven for the treatment of prostate cancer. This targeted therapy destroys only the cancer, saving the healthy surrounding tissue and ultimately reducing side effects. Spokane CyberKnife and Radiation Oncology Center is a comprehensive cancer treatment center that offers all forms of Radiation therapy through various technologies – making it unique to Spokane and the entire eastern Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and Montana.
"It was an enormous shock, but I started thinking of the options. I began researching the different available treatments and started thinking more positively about it,” Ken explains.
Combined with the expertise and care of Dr. Karie Lynn-Kelly, the CyberKnife system gave Ken a convenient and comfortable experience. He underwent his treatment sessions with full confidence and felt perfectly content both during the process and after - even stopping for lunch and catching up with friends right after a treatment session. Under CyberKnife, patient side effects are minimized and enable them to continue on their day.
"The treatment was so relaxing that on four different occasions I took a nap. It was a great experience: there was no stress, strain, or anxiety," he says. "The system is very quiet and efficient and its operators were very helpful."
Ken is eager to work with the center on follow-ups; the hot rod hobbyist is on the track to recovery. "My experience with CyberKnife was one of the most positive I've had in my life," Ken says warmly. "The people were absolutely wonderful and every one of them went out of their way to make me feel at home. They even gave me an alternate route to go home in case the freeway jammed up!"
