Non-Surgical Skin Cancer Treatment With Electronic Brachytherapy (eBx®)

Painless Treatment With Excellent Cosmetic Results

What is Electronic Brachytherapy Treatment (eBx®)?

Spokane Cyberknife is pleased to offer patients the latest, proven, pain-free and most advanced non-surgical treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers all over the body with the Xoft electronic Brachytherapy (eBx) radiation system.

Skin cancer treatment with electronic brachytherapy is administered at Spokane Cyberknife by our radiation technologist under the direct supervision of our board-certified radiation oncologist who specializes in radiation treatment of skin cancer. The 6 minute treatment regimen consists of 8-10 treatment sessions that vary based on the tumor size, depth, and location. Prior to your first treatment our radiation physicist together with the radiation oncologist develop an individualized treatment plan for each patient.

In addition, custom shielding is created to optimize the delivery of radiation to the area of the skin cancer and protect the adjacent normal tissue. The painless treatments take place two to three times per week and take less than ten minutes. At the completion of the treatment, the x-ray source is turned off and the shield is removed. The patient is able to drive themselves home and immediately return to normal activities. As a superficial skin treatment localized to the skin cancer, there is no radiation exposure to other areas of your body.

Electronic Brachytheraphy Treatment
Compared To Surgical Treatment

The most common treatment of NMSC’s is surgical removal, however there are many patients with skin cancers in sensitive areas that may effect patients cosmetically or with visible scars (e.g. scalp, eyes, ears, nose, chest or extremities). In addition there are many patients that cannot undergo surgery (due to medications) or simply refuse surgery that now have a proven treatment.

There is also the active patient that needs to return to work or would like to stay active during treatment vs. waiting two weeks of recovery from surgery – electronic Brachytherapy at Spokane Cyberknife is now available. Electronic Brachytherapy is a non-invasive alternative to surgical treatment and does not require needles, cutting, or stitches. With cure rates up to 97.5%, its success is similar to surgical excision and approaches the cure rate of Mohs Surgery without the risks of infection, distortion of anatomy, or unpredictable scarring. Radiation treatment provides an excellent cosmetic outcome through optimizing the number and strength of radiation treatments.

Skin cancers that are aggressive, rapidly growing, deep, recurrent, or present in younger patients will more commonly be treated by Mohs Surgery or excision. The Xoft System is the only electronic brachytherapy system with peer reviewed published clinical data supporting its use in skin cancer. Clinical outcome data on patients with non-melanoma skin cancer treated with the Xoft System showed excellent cosmetic results and low toxicity with no recurrences at up to three years post-treatment.
