What is Dupuytren’s Contracture?

Dupuytren’s contracture (also called Dupuytren’s disease) is a condition that causes the thickening of fascia, a tissue layer under the skin of your palm. Over time, this can lead to hard lumps or thick bands, which may cause one or more fingers—often the ring or little finger—to bend inward toward the palm. Both hands can be affected, and in very rare cases, the feet may develop similar symptoms.

Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of Dupuytren’s disease is unknown, but it is the most common inherited connective tissue disorder, affecting around 4% of the population. Several factors may increase the risk of developing this condition, including:

  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Smoking
  • Epilepsy
  • Diabetes
  • Family history
  • Manual labor
  • Hand trauma

Symptoms and Progression

The disease may go through phases of active symptoms, such as pain and difficulty with daily activities, followed by extended periods with little to no pain. However, the contractures can worsen over time in some cases.

Treatment Options

While there is no permanent cure, several treatments can manage, and correct contractures based on their severity:

  • Collagenase injection
  • Needle aponeuroromy
  • Surgical fascienctomy
  • Radiation therapy

How Does Radiation Therapy Work?

Low-dose radiotherapy targets the nodules in the palm, softening and shrinking them. This treatment slows the growth of the lumps and cords by affecting fibroblasts—the cells responsible for forming them. Radiotherapy also reduces inflammation, easing pain in the affected area.
